Paul’s Story - Injury at a Public Event

Paul was attending an outdoor music festival with his friends, enjoying the day. The event was bustling with people, but something felt off about the crowd management. There were no clear barriers to direct the flow of people, and as the day went on, the crowd grew denser. While trying to move between stages, Paul was suddenly caught in a wave of people pushing forward. Trapped in the crush, he was knocked to the ground and trampled, leaving him with a severely sprained ankle and multiple bruises.

At the hospital, the doctor informed Paul that his ankle injury would take months to fully heal. What concerned him even more was how the event organisers could let something like this happen. They had sold thousands of tickets but hadn’t provided adequate safety measures for crowd control. When Paul contacted the event organisers, they were quick to deny responsibility, claiming that the crowd’s behaviour was unpredictable and out of their control.

However, public liability law requires organisers of events to ensure the safety of attendees, and liability is not so easily dismissed. The lack of proper crowd control measures indicated negligence on the part of the organisers. By working with legal experts, Paul was able to gather evidence—photos of the overcrowded areas and witness statements—that clearly showed the organisers had failed to take reasonable steps to protect attendees.

Liability was established through this evidence, and Paul successfully made a public liability claim. He received compensation for his medical costs, as well as for the time he had to take off work to recover from his injury. Through careful investigation, Paul was able to hold the organisers accountable for their negligence.
